Both Protagonist and Antagonist are characters in a narrative writing.
Character can be defined as, the people or subject of the story. Or are peoples or things that are
given a role to play in a literary work. Character can be varry due to how he/she appeared in a prose
writng, so we can classfiy the characters in prose writing accoding to its appearance. Protagonist
and Antagonist are the types of characters in narrative writing.
By using a text THINGS FALL APART which authorized by CHINUA ACHEBE from
Nigeria, to defferentiate Protagonist from Antagonist as kind of characters used in narrative writing.
Protagonist is a hero or heroine and the central of the story. From the text Things Fall Apart
the central character is OKONKWO who appeared from beginning to the end of the story. Also
Okonkwo was well known in nine village as stronger man enough to fight (solid person achieved)
and he had not patience with unsuccessful man. While
Antagonist is the character that opposes the protagonist. From the text Things Fall Apart
there are some people challenges Okonkwo.
Examples: (a) Missionaries (white men's) challenged Okonkwo when breaking down the culture of
Okonkwos society by introduced a western culture and bult up the churches and finaly
to colonise the village. So white mens was opposes Okonkwo when they convices the
Elders of the clan to follow th missionaries culture and allows them to untrust
Okonkwo because is unskilled.
(b) also Nwoye (Okonkwos son) challenged his father when he hate to follow what his
father told and stayed near with missionaries and finaly retered to missionaries
religiously. So Nwoye was opposes his father, because Okonkwo was like a son to
follow his status.
(c) Obierika (Okonkwos friend) were oppeses Okonkwo when Okonkwo is killed the
white mens (missionaries), were every one feared for what Okonkwos did. So
Okonkwo by saw that no one can help him to fight agaist the colonialist started to run
away and killed himself.
